How to choose the Right Coach for You

Thinking about coaching? Choosing the right coach is crucial. I have a bias here: successful coaching engagements are built on a strong, effective relationship between the coach and the client.

Coaching is more than just a commodity or service.

Here are some six pointers to help you choose the right coach for you:

1. Be honest about what you want to achieve in a coaching relationship. Take time to consider what you genuinely want to work on. It may be better self-awareness, career progression or leadership growth but have a clear starting point. This may change over time!

2. Before choosing a coach, check their qualifications and experience to ensure they align with your development goals. Don’t hesitate to ask questions; anyone can call themselves a coach, so make sure you get a detailed understanding of their background, training, approach, and values.

3. How do you feel when you’re with them? Do they show curiosity, empathy, and make you feel comfortable? Are they someone who can help you explore possibilities without judgement or criticism?

4. Beware of coaches who claim to have all the answers. The most effective coaching relationships help you develop and implement your own solutions.

5. Check the how the coach manages boundaries and confidentiality. Coaching can involve you feeling vulnerable, so you need to feel safe and supported in a structured environment.

6. Chemistry matters. Trust your instincts – if it doesn’t feel right, move on. This applies to both parties. An ethical coach will politely decline the engagement if they don’t feel they’re a good match.
