Self Reflection as a Superpower

Self reflection, the act of genuinely engaging with our thoughts, emotions and experiences is a powerful tool for personal change. You may feel this will not help, that it will lead to rumination with no progress, but this is not the case.

If you actively engage with your thoughts and make choices about your next steps the change can feel miraculous.

The Bain framework suggest following five key steps for successful self reflection on a difficult or challenging experience:

  1. Reporting of the context of the experience

  2. Responding to the experience (observations, feelings, thoughts, etc.)

  3. Relating the experience to knowledge and skills you already have

  4. Reasoning about the significant factors/theory to explain the experience

  5. Reconstructing your practice by planning future actions for a similar experience
